MAPPING EARLY NEW YORK
AND LONG ISLAND
A DEMONSTRATION

Brought to you by
The New Amsterdam History Center

in collaboration with the New Netherland Institute and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society

Wednesday, June 1, 2022
6 to 7:30 PM (EST)
Q & A Will Follow

Come explore 17th Century New Netherland with your guide, NAHC Trustee Toya Dubin, director of the MAPPING EARLY NEW YORK project, an innovative approach to telling history. On this lively journey back in time, you’ll meet Native American Chief Wampage II and his daughter Anna Pell, enslaved Africans Manuel de Gerrit de Reus and Dorothy Creole, Jewish resident Asser Levy, Anthony Salee, aka “The Turk”, and women’s advocate Catalina Trico. Learn how New Netherlanders lived, where they worked, whom they married and even what they drank. This diverse population, said to have spoken 18 languages or dialects, laid the foundation for today’s New York. Sliding time maps and a walk down Stone Street will capture your imagination. For the first time, NAHC will reveal aspects of Long Island’s little known past as we feature this new expansion of the project.

A zoom link and password will be emailed to registered participants the day before the event.
