Why Support the New Amsterdam History Center

By joining the New Amsterdam History Center you will support our mission to serve the widest public possible by sharing and stimulating new interest in the early story of New York during its period of Dutch rule that is not widely known, and to show its continued influence through the 17th century and beyond. The unique community that New York City became and remains – as a commercial center, and diverse and adaptable society – can be traced back to this era of Dutch colonial rule. Your membership helps us to spread knowledge of this historical period.

Founded in 2005, The New Amsterdam History Center (NAHC), like New Amsterdam itself and so many other human enterprises, changes, learns, and grows. NAHC began with an idea for helping tourists discover New York City’s early history, and learned that New Yorkers are also curious about the past. The Center today is a vibrant provider of intimate events probing the Dutch Period of Manhattan and New Netherland generally to show how the New York we know and love came to be from its beginnings as a small, yet multicultural, European trading station. We believe that understanding our roots and our rootedness strengthens and nourishes all of New York life in the present. William Faulkner expressed it very well when he said, “The past is not dead. It isn’t even past”.

Your contribution will enable us to:

  • Maximize our story-telling capacities

  • Organize events and substantive public programs
  • Further develop a virtual experience that reveals the multifaceted history of New Amsterdam
  • Help us achieve our ultimate goal – creation of a physical center of exploration and learning about New Amsterdam. For further information, please contact us at info@newamsterdamhistorycenter.org or call (212) 874-4702.
