06:00pm to 08:00pm - September 26, 2024

Presented live on Zoom by NYHS and NNI

History isn't just found in books and documents. We live among—and sometimes in—history. Join Ian Stewart, owner of New Netherland Timber Framing and Preservation, and Russell Shorto, director of the New Amsterdam Project as they discuss Ian's 20+ year career working on historic buildings and heritage sites. From Dutch barns to 17th-century homes, discover how we are still preserving New Netherland's architecture all across the country—even in Texas!

Ian K.M. Stewart owns New Netherland Timber Framing and Preservation, a firm which specializes in the preservation of built heritage through assessment, documentation, and physical conservation and restoration. He also puts great emphasis on the preservation of traditional woodworking and other historic craft skills, tools, and techniques. He has 20 years of work experience with preservation working on a wide variety of historic buildings and cultural heritage sites both domestically and internationally. His work in this field was recognized by the New Netherland Institute, who awarded him the Alice P. Kenney award in 2018.

Russell Shorto is the bestselling author of The Island at the Center of the WorldAmsterdam, and Revolution Song. He is the director of the New Amsterdam Project at the New-York Historical Society.
