Historian Charles Gehring and historical artist Len Tantillo will provide an overview of the 17th century Dutch colony that became New York. Using period documents, numerous works of art, digital models and diagrams, they will explore the evolution of New Netherland, provide a background perspective of the conditions in Europe leading up to the settlement of the colony, and explain the functional interconnection of forts and rivers to the city of Manhattan. Combining Mr. Gehring’s 40 years of experience as historian and translator of colonial Dutch documents, and Mr. Tantillo’s 30 years as an historical artist specializing in 17th Century New York, the subject promises to create an insightful, visually engaging, and informative program. Join us for this opportunity to explore New Netherland from two unique perspectives.
